Mercer County’s unemployment rate is at 6.5 percent. The latest number released by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and compares with a 6.6 percent figure from a year ago. From year ago levels, unemployment slightly higher in Henry, Knox, Henderson, Rock Island and Warren Counties. In the region, job growth occurred in Leisure-Hospitality, Professional-Business Services, Retail Trade, Construction, Wholesale Trade and Transportation- Warehousing-Utilities. Declines were posted in the Government and Manufacturing sectors compared to last year at this time. The highest unemployment rate in Western Illinois is 9.4 percent in Fulton County. Statewide, the unemployment rate is 8.3 percent and the national rate 7.0 percent.
