Mercer County unemployment is back in double digits. The latest number from the Illinois Department of Employment Security shows the local jobless rate at 11.6 percent for January, which is four percentage points lower than a year ago at this time. Unemployment is also lower from year ago levels in Rock Island, Henry, and Henderson Counties but slightly higher in Knox and Warren Counties. In the region in January, employment gains were made in Manufacturing, Professional-Business Services, Educational-Health Services, Wholesale Trade and Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities sectors. Retail Trade and Government sectors posted declines. The highest unemployment rate in Western Illinois is 12.2 percent in Fulton County. Statewide, the Illinois unemployment rate is 10.1 percent. Nationally, the unemployment rate is 8.5 percent.
