McWhorter: Delaying Treasurer Appointment Will Save County $8,000

August 3rd, 2014

treasurerMercer County Board Chairman Jeff McWhorter¬†reiterates he will not be appointing a County Treasurer on Tuesday night.¬† He tells WRMJ today that he will wait the maximum 60 days before the appointment is made, which would be September 24th. McWhorter says by delaying the appointment, the county can save almost $8,000. Former Mercer County Treasurer Mike Bertelsen earned almost a year’s worth of salary while not working and awaiting trial on felony theft charges involving county 911 funds. He pled guilty last week and resigned from the position.
Although the Mercer County Republican Party has nominated Sandy Bull to fill the position, McWhorter says he will consider other names for the appointment and that person will serve through the end of Bertelsen’s term, which is December 1st. Bull is the Republican candidate for Treasurer this November, running against Democrat Bev Lower, the current Deputy Treasurer.
