David Loomis runs the Center for Renewable Energy at ISU. He says he is not as optimistic as is the U. S. Department of Energy and believes Illinois wind farm construction has plateaued for now. Illinois stands at fourth in the country, with 3,560 megawatts of wind power capacity. Installations last year account for 823 megawatts of that.
The status of a wind farm project in Mercer County remains up in the air. BP Wind Energy was proposing a 100 wind turbine project south of Aledo, involving several counties. But the Houston based company is selling its wind business. The last time WRMJ talked with local project spokesman Roger Brown was in 2012, when they were hopeful for 2013 construction, but that won’t happen now with BP getting out of the wind business. BP had occupied a local storefront in downtown Aledo, but that has since been vacated.
