Mercer County Treasurer Mike Bertelsen is scheduled to appear in Mercer County Circuit Court this week for a change of venue hearing. It marks his first court appearance since an October 2nd perliminary hearing. Bertelsen was arrested back on August 27th and is facing a Class 3 felony theft charge, accusing him of taking over $500 from the Republican Central Committee of Mercer County. The allegations do not involve any Mercer County taxpayer funds, but the Mercer County Board approved conducting a forensic audit to make sure taxpayer funds were being properly handled and all proper accounting protections were in place. The findings of that audit have not been released at this time. Bertelsen’s attorney is seeking a change of venue due to pre-trial publicity. The hearing is set for Friday morning. Bertelsen is in his fifth term as treasurer, most recently being re-elected in 2010. He is free on $20,000 bond and remains on the job.
