Not often do games match the hype going into them. Saturday afternoon’s Class 2A second round playoff game between Mercer County and Rockridge at George Pratt Memorial Field did all of that and more. With over 2,500 fans packed into that venue, Mercer County’s Zeke Snyder batted away a two point conversion pass preserving a 26-20 double overtime victory. With :04 seconds left in regulation, the Rockets Cole Neneman potential game winning filed goal set up by a fake punt attempt shrunk from 30 to 20 yards after two Golden Eagle penalties, but when he finally got to kick it was wide left. In the first extra period, Rockridge scored on their first play and added a two point conversion. Mercer County responded with a touchdown and a two point conversion to send it into a second OT. Mercer County got the ball first this time and scored, but their two point conversion was stuffed. Rockridge then was faced with a fourth down and goal from the five yard line to tie the game and win it with an extra point. The Rocket’s Darren Southwell rolled right and his pass into the end zone was knocked down by the Eagle’s linebacker preserving the win and ending the Rockets undefeated season. The defending state champs now advance to the quarter-finals where they will host Farmington Saturday in Aledo.
