December 9th, 2013

cooperAn Aledo man has been sentenced to 12-years in prison in a Mercer County sex abuse case. 46 year old Charles Cooper was found guilty of five felony counts during a bench trial last August in Mercer County Circuit Court. The case involved two different girls under the age of 13. The most serious offense was a Class X felony of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child. He was also convicted of two Class 2 and two Class 4 felonies. Mercer County Assistant State’s Attorney Meeghan Lee was seeking an 18-year prison term for Cooper, but was satisfied with the end result.

Public Defender Dan Dalton was seeking the minimum six-year prison term for his client. Cooper made an unsworn statement during today’s sentencing hearing, proclaiming his innocence. He faced a maximum of 30-years in prison. Aledo Police Department and Illinois State Police were involved in the investigation. Cooper has been in custody at the Mercer County Jail on $125,000 bond since his arrest last February.
