Golden Eagles Advance To Semi-Finals

November 10th, 2012

The Mercer County Golden Eagles advanced the Class 2A Semi-finals as they stopped Amboy-LaMoille 33-21 Saturday afternoon.  The Golden Eagles score twice in the fourth quarter to pull out the win.  With Mercer County clinging to a 26-21  lead with just under 3:00 left, Austin Rooth picked off a Tyson Powers pass and took it 47 yards for the score to cement the victory.  Mercer County trailed 7-0 after the first quarter but rallied to take a 13-7 lead midway through the second quarter but the Clipper marched 67 yards to score with 2:17 left  but the Eagles blocked the extra point to make it 13-13 at the half.  Mercer County took the lead in the third quarter 20-13 on a Jesse Snyder 12 yard run but Amboy-LaMoille tied it midway through the fourth quarter and the two point conversion put them up 21-20.  The Golden Eagles then marched 55 yards to take the lead when Matlick hit Devin Morford on the sideline and he turned it into a 55 yard pass and catch touchdown to give Mercer County the lead, setting up Rooth’s big interception.   Mercer County goes to 12-0 on the season and they will host Clifton Central Saturday at George Pratt Memorial field in a second round rematch of 2010 won by the Comets 56-27.
