The local softball community mourning the loss of one of the great teachers of the game. Jeff Tyrrell of Alexis died this morning. He taught the art of pitching and had many pupils, including former United High School flame thrower Katie Bertelsen, now at Southern Illinois University. She says Tyrrell deserves a lot of the credit for her success.

In addition to coaching, Tyrrell served many years as a public school teacher, and basketball and football official. He also at one time served on the Mercer County Board
