Mercer County School Board Considers Sales Tax Referendum

October 5th, 2012

As the Mercer County School Board deals with a $1-million revenue shortfall, in addition to program and staff cuts, the board is also exploring a 1-percent sales tax says Unit 404 Superintendent Alan Boucher.

The issue could be on the ballot in April. It would have to be approved by voters in all of Mercer County. The school board is also exploring raising the district’s property tax rate by an additional 5-to-25 cents, which could generate anywhere from $61,000 to $308,000.
