Mercer County Shelter Response Plan Activated Due To Winter Storm

February 26th, 2013

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Tuesday February 26th effective until 6am Wednesday February 27th.  Snow accumulations of 5-8 inches are expected, spreading across the area after 9am and continuing through tonight. The heaviest snow will fall this afternoon with possible wind gust up to 35 mph causing blowing snow and reduced visibility. This may result in hazardous road conditions and the chance of power outages. In preparation, local emergency planning officials have activated the Mercer County Shelter Response Plan.  In the event of power outages the following shelter locations will open:  Aledo Fire Department, Aledo VFW, Viola Fire Department, Joy Fire Department, Preemption Township Hall, New Boston Fire Department, Eliza Community Center, Keithsburg City Hall, Matherville Village Hall, Seaton Fire Department, and Sherrard Fire Department.  These shelters will only stay opened during the emergency or power outage-please remember that leaving your home during a winter storm presents dangers on the roadways and risks to your safety.  Remember to bring with you to a shelter only essential personal items, such as any medication you may need, a blanket and pillow, and personal hygiene items. For more information or if you have any questions, call the Mercer County Health Department at 309-582-3759.
