The Mercer County unemployment rate drops to 6.6 percent. The latest number released today by the Illinois Department of Employment Security and is a 1-percent improvement from the same period a year ago. Unemployment is also down compared to year ago levels in Warren, Knox, Henry and Rock Island Counties, but higher in Henderson County. In the region in April, job growth occurred in Professional-Business Services, Retail Trade, Leisure-Hospitality, and Transportation-Warehousing-Utilities. Declines were posted in Government, Construction, and Information. The Illinois unemployment rate is currently at 7.2 percent with the national rate at 5.9 percent. The highest unemployment rate in Western Illinois is 8.5 percent in Fulton County.
