Good Season Expected For Morel Mushroom Hunters

morel mushroomsThe cold winter weather may have killed some of Illinois’ fruit crop, but it seems to have done wonders for morel mushrooms. Tom Nauman, with Morel Mania, says they’re expecting a great harvest season.

Nauman says the deep freeze stressed tree roots and the ground-dwelling fungus, causing lots of mushrooms to sprout. And, they’ll thrive even more if the state gets plenty of rain. Harvest is already underway in southern Illinois and it’ll continue through early May in the northern part of the state.
