Smithsonian Brings “Hometown Teams” Traveling Exhibit Through Illinois

hometown teamsA traveling exhibit from the Smithsonian is making the rounds in Illinois. It’s called “Hometown Teams”, and it focuses on the connection between local sports teams and their fans. Mallory Laurel, the coordinator for the tour for the Illinois Humanities Council, says each of the host sites will add their own local history to the national exhibit.

At the exhibit’s first stop in Cobden, the focus is on the 1964 Cobden Appleknockers basketball team, which finished second in the state’s high school basketball tournament. And Judy Travelstead, board member of the Union County Historical Society, says part of her research involved tracking down results from sports teams representing long-forgotten segregated high schools in Southern Illinois.

The exhibit will be at the Rock Island Public Library from September 13th through October 26th.
